Madonna on The Billboard 200 chart.

Last update: February 20, 2003

Madonna has released 15 albums (including soundtracks and greatest hits collections). 2000's "Music" was her eighth studio set. Four of her albums have reached No. 1: "Like A Virgin," "True Blue," "Like A Prayer" and "Music." Five of her efforts have peaked at No. 2. Only the dance remix collection "You Can Dance" and the repackaged "Evita" highlights set missed the top ten. (Since the "Evita" highlights album is simply a distillation of the previously released two-disc "Evita" set, it's not really a "new" album. Thus, it does not count towards Madonna's tally. However, it is included on the table below for research purposes.)

All of Madonna's efforts have been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The platinum award indicates that 1,000,000 units have been shipped to retailers (not necessarily sold to the consumer). Her total U.S. RIAA tally comes to 57 million units. Notes as indicated by superscript:

1 "Who's That Girl" is the soundtrack from the film of the same name. Madonna contributed four songs to the set: the title cut, "Causing A Commotion," "The Look Of Love," and "Can't Stop." While she only has four of nine songs on the album, the set is billed as a Madonna effort and as a soundtrack.

2 "You Can Dance" is a seven song remix album. The CD features three additional dub versions of songs on the album.

3 "I'm Breathless - Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture 'Dick Tracy'" is a pseudo-soundtrack to the film of the same name. Madonna played Breathless Mahoney in the film -- thus the cheeky album title. The album includes her Stephen Sondheim-penned numbers from the film ("More," "Sooner Or Later," and "What Can You Lose"). The rest of the album is filled out by tracks "inspired" by the film ("I'm Going Bananas," "Hanky Panky," etc.) and one track that was neither written for the movie, nor inspired by it: "Vogue." The latter track was the aborted B-side of "Keep It Together," the final single from "Like A Prayer." Once it became a single on its own, it needed an album for a home. Since "I'm Breathless" was about to come out, Warner Bros. tacked it on the end of the album. It's no wonder the set peaked at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 and is double-platinum.

4 "Something To Remember" is a greatest ballads collection. It includes three new songs: a cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" and two new songs co-written and co-produced with David Foster, "One More Chance" and "You'll See." Additionally, Madonna's cover of Rose Royce's "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" (originally recorded for the "Like A Virgin" album) was remixed and included on "Something To Remember."

5 "Evita" is the soundtrack from the Madonna film of the same name. Madonna is the primary performer on the two-disc package, however, co-stars Jonathan Pryce and Antonio Banderas share many vocal duties. Thus, it is not billed as a Madonna album. However, the RIAA counts its certifications towards Madonna's overall tally. (Much like they do for Whitney Houston's "The Bodyguard," even though it is a soundtrack.)

6 "Music From The Motion Picture 'Evita'" is a one-disc "highlights" set from "Evita."
