Madonna on The Billboard Hot 100 chart
Last update: March 24, 2004
(Maintained by Keith Caulfield)Madonna has commercially released 53 singles in the U.S. While her first two releases, 1982's "Everybody" and 1983's "Burning Up," failed to break onto The Billboard Hot 100, every commercially released single through 2004's "American Life" charted. Her lowest peaking entry is "Nothing Really Matters" which stalled at No. 93, while her most successful chart title is "Take A Bow," which spent seven weeks at No. 1. Only five of her commercially released singles failed to reach The Billboard Hot 100: "Everybody" and "Burning Up," along with two singles from 2003: "Hollywood" and "Nothing Fails" and "Love Profusion" (2004).
2002's "Die Another Day" was her 35th single to hit the top ten on The Billboard Hot 100. Only Elvis Presley has more top ten entries, with 38.
2003's "Me Against The Music" (with Britney Spears) was her 46th top 40 hit on The Billboard Hot 100. She has the most top 40 hits of any female artist, and is tied with Stevie Wonder for fourth place among all artists with the most top 40 singles on The Billboard Hot 100.
In 2000, "Music" became her 12th No. 1 on The Billboard Hot 100. That total ties her with The Supremes tally of chart-toppers. Only Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, The Beatles, and Elvis Presley have more.
Madonna has placed a single in the top 40 of The Billboard Hot 100 every year since 1983 (save for 1988, when she had no releases whatsoever).
According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Madonna has 24 gold singles (500,000 units shipped) to her credit, the most for any female artist. She now ties The Beatles for second place behind Elvis Presley among artists with the most gold singles.
Recently, some of her singles have not been commercially released in the U.S. Both "Beautiful Stranger" and "American Pie" were not issued in the states. Since Billboard changed its rules as to what can chart on its Hot 100 list, non-commercially released songs can now chart. Previous to Dec. 1998, an entry had to be commercially available. Non-retail titles chart only based upon their airplay points, since there is no retail component to help it move up the chart. Thus, these album cuts often stall out at lower rungs on the chart. (Notice the relatively low peaks of "Beautiful Stranger" [No. 19] and "American Pie" [No. 29].)
What follows is a list of every Madonna entry on The Billboard Hot 100. Noted are:
- Debut date
- Chart peak
- Total weeks on chart
- RIAA certification information (denoted by G: Gold, 500,000 units shipped; P: Platinum, 1,000,000 units shipped; multiplatinum titles indicated by numerals following the letter)
- Title
- B-side track listing

1 Though "Everybody" did not chart on the Hot 100, it did make it onto the Bubbling Under Hot 100. The single debuted on Dec. 25, 1982 on that chart and peaked at No. 107. It spent eight weeks on the (then) 10 position chart. Bubbling Under Hot 100 lists the top singles which are poised to make an entrance to the Hot 100, but are bubbling under No. 100 -- hence the name of the chart. "Everybody's" follow-up, "Burning Up," failed to dent either the Bubbling Under Hot 100 or the Hot 100.
2 "Crazy For You" is from the film "Vision Quest" and was not included on any Madonna album until The Immaculate Collection in 1990. Previous to that, it could only be found on the Vision Quest soundtrack along with another Madonna song, "Gambler."
3 The gold certification for "Angel" is for its 12" single (Sire 20335). The B-side of the 12" single is "Into The Groove."
4 "Live To Tell" is from the film "At Close Range," starring Madonna's then-husband Sean Penn. At the time of its release, the single was not available on any album. When the title went to No. 1, it was only the fifth single to hit the top of the Hot 100 and not be available on an album. "Live To Tell" later surfaced on the True Blue album, released in July 1986.
5 "Ain't No Big Deal" is a previously unreleased track. It was originally slated for her first album.
6,7 "Who's That Girl" and "Causing A Commotion" are both from the film "Who's That Girl," starring Madonna. Those songs (as well as two other new Madonna tracks, "Can't Stop" and "The Look Of Love") can be found on the Who's That Girl soundtrack.
8 "Supernatural" was an unreleased track until this point. It also made an appearance on the AIDS benefit album, "Red, Hot and Dance."
9,10 "Vogue" and "Hanky Panky" are both from the album I'm Breathless -- Music From and Inspired by the film Dick Tracy. "Vogue" is not from or inspired by the film. It was originally intended as the B-side to "Keep It Together" but Warner Bros. executives thought that the track was too strong to be relegated to B-side status, so it was released on its own. It was then tacked onto the I'm Breathless album.
11 "This Used To Be My Playground" is from the film "A League of Their Own" starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna. The song plays over the closing credits of the film, though it is not on the film's soundtrack album. At the time, the only album the track was available on was the Barcelona Gold summer Olympics benefit album. It later appeared on Madonna's Something To Remember album.
12 The maxi-single of "Rain" includes the album version, a radio remix, a remix of the album cut "Waiting" with a rap by Everlast (formerly of House Of Pain, now a solo artist), and a non-album track titled "Up Down Suite." The latter track, in its shorter form, is also known as "Goodbye To Innocence" and can be found on the "Just Say Roe" compilation album. "Up Down Suite" can also be found on the French, Japansese and German maxi-singles for "Rain," while "Goodbye To Innocence" can be found on the Mexican maxi-single for "Rain." Whew!
13 "I'll Remember" is the theme from the film "With Honors" starring Joe Pesci and Brendan Fraser. Alek Keshishian ("Truth or Dare") directed the film, and Patrick Leonard (who has co-written and co-produced with Madonna before) scored it. The track could also be found on the With Honors soundtrack, Maverick's first soundtrack release.
14 Both "You Must Love Me" and "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" are from the film "Evita" starring Madonna, Antonio Banderas and Jonathan Pryce. "You Must Love Me" won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song. The song was written specifically for the film version and marked the first time songwriters Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber had collaborated in over 15 years.
15 "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" was only released as a maxi-single. The catalog number reflects this.
16 "Has To Be" was a previously unavailable track in the United States. It is on the "Ray of Light" album in Japan and was originally intended to be the 14th track on the album in the U.S. Supposedly because of Madonna's numerology interests at the time, she decided on letting the album be released in the U.S. with only 13 tracks, as 13 is a lucky number.
17 "Beautiful Stranger" is from the soundtrack to "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," and was specifically written for the film. "Stranger" was not commercially released as a single in the U.S. and charted on The Billboard Hot 100 solely on airplay points.
18 "American Pie" is from the soundtrack to "The Next Best Thing." The 1972 classic was originally written and performed by Don McLean, and hit No. 1 on The Billboard Hot 100. Madonna's "Pie" was not commercially released as a single in the U.S. and charted on The Billboard Hot 100 solely on airplay points. The soundtrack also features an original Madonna track, "Time Stood Still," as well as material from Christina Aguilera, Moby, Beth Orton and Groove Armada.
19 "Cyberraga" is a non-album track (on the U.S. version of the album "Music"). "Cyberraga" was produced and written by Madonna and Talvin Singh and is only found on the Asian import of the album "Music."
20 "What It Feels Like For A Girl" was commercially released as a maxi-single and DVD single. The catalog number is for the CD maxi-single.
21 "Die Another Day" was commercially released as a maxi-single only. The catalog number is for the CD maxi-single.
22 "Hollywood" was Madonna's first commercially released single to not chart on The Billboard Hot 100 since 1982. It was released as a maxi-single only. The catalog number is for the CD maxi-single.
23 "Me Against The Music" was Madonna's first commercially released (or promoted-to-radio) single where she shared billing with another artist. It was released as a maxi-single only. The catalog number is for the CD maxi-single.
24 "Nothing Fails" was released as a maxi-single only. The catalog number is for the CD maxi-single. The CD maxi-single includes remixes of "Nothing Fails" and "Nobody Knows Me." Both songs charted on Billboard's Hot Dance/Club Play chart. The former went to No. 1.
25 "Love Profusion" was released as a maxi-single only. The catalog number is for the CD maxi-single. The CD maxi-single features remixes of "Love Profusion" and one remix of "Nothing Fails."
